Token Wise is a browser extension that shows live token-cost estimates for AI prompts across multiple platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, Poe, OpenRouter, ChatHub, TypingMind and You.com. It displays cost badges next to the prompt box as you type, color-coded by spending level.
The extension includes a one-click optimization feature that rewrites prompts to be cheaper and clearer using either a cloud-based rewriter or a fully offline local mode. Users can see side-by-side comparisons of original and optimized prompts with token and credit differences.
Token Wise uses transparent, published per-token rates from each AI provider and applies a standard formula to estimate costs based on character count. It prioritizes privacy: prompts never leave your browser unless you explicitly click Optimize, and optional API monitoring is disabled by default.
The extension works on Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, and Opera, with keyboard shortcuts for hands-free optimization and features including a 100-prompt history with CSV export, dashboard with savings statistics, and custom focus presets.

How accurate are the cost estimates?
Estimates are accurate within roughly ±15% for English text using the 4-characters-per-token heuristic with a 1.3× safety factor. Code, JSON, or non-Latin scripts may deviate more. Token Wise intentionally quotes higher to avoid bill surprises.
