rostr automatically gives each coding agent session a unique name drafted from a team roster, helping you track and remember what each agent is working on
The story so far
Homepage of rostr
rostr is a CLI tool that assigns memorable names to each coding agent session from rosters you customize. When a session starts, rostr drafts a name and tells the agent who it is; the name appears in the session title and helps you trace notifications back to their source. When the session ends, the name returns to the bench for reuse.
It integrates with Claude Code, Codex, tmux, and herdr. You can use pre-built rosters (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, NBA Legends, and others) or create your own. rostr works locally by default, storing everything in SQLite on your machine; you can also enable cloud mode for sessions across different machines, with end-to-end encryption for task and repo metadata.
The tool comes with a small CLI and hooks that run automatically. It adds minimal token overhead and never blocks a session—network timeouts are set to 3 seconds with background fallbacks.

What happens to an agent's name when a session ends?
When a session ends, its name goes back to the bench and becomes available for a new session. A session that is never seen again is benched after 24 hours, or you can free a name sooner with rostr bench .
Does rostr add significant token overhead to agent sessions?
rostr adds a few hundred tokens to a session, almost all on the first prompt. Later prompts add nothing unless the session is renamed. The rostr skill adds about 80 tokens to the skill list, and the agent's identity adds about 120 tokens on the first prompt.
Is my data private when using rostr cloud mode?
In cloud mode, tasks and repo names are encrypted on your machine before being sent to the server. The server never sees your rostr key, prompts, or code. No account is needed; only your rostr key is required.
What tools does rostr integrate with?
rostr integrates with Claude Code, Codex TUI and desktop apps, tmux, and herdr. It also works with the rostr CLI and can be extended using rostr stats --json or the API endpoint.
