The story so far
Homepage of OpenVDDK
OpenVDDK is an independent, open-source drop-in replacement for VMware's libvixDiskLib.so.8.0.3 library, written entirely from scratch using only public documentation and black-box testing with no VMware code included.
Applications that load the library do not need modification: OpenVDDK provides the same file name, functions, and interface, allowing a simple file replacement to enable support for alternative disk access methods. It supports three transport mechanisms for reading virtual disks: HotAdd (attaching snapshot disks to proxy VMs), NBDSSL (encrypted network transport), and NBD (unencrypted network transport).
The library is read-only by design for backup and migration use cases and connects only to the vCenter and ESXi hosts specified by the user, with no telemetry or external communication. OpenVDDK is released under the Apache 2.0 license with both user and developer kits available on GitHub.
Typeset features

Does OpenVDDK require changes to existing applications?
No. Applications that load libvixDiskLib.so.8.0.3 do not need modification. OpenVDDK provides the same file name, functions, and interface, allowing users to replace the file and restart the service.
Can OpenVDDK write to disks?
No. OpenVDDK is read-only by design for backup and migration use cases. Write calls return the same read-only error as VMware's library.
What data does OpenVDDK send externally?
OpenVDDK connects only to the vCenter and ESXi hosts specified by the user and contains no telemetry. Nothing is sent anywhere else.
How does OpenVDDK compare in performance to VMware's VDDK?
In testing, OpenVDDK showed significantly faster read rates: 2,488 MiB/s compared to 1,441 MiB/s on a 200 GiB disk, and faster disk open and close times. However, performance depends on storage, network, CPU and application factors.
