Does CodeTrain write code for you?
No. The tutor's core rule is that the learner writes every line. It never writes or pastes solutions, not even a single line. When learners are stuck, they get a smaller step or the next hint instead.

CodeTrain is an AI tutor that teaches developers on their own codebase by breaking tasks into steps, asking questions, and reviewing code—but never writing it

CodeTrain breaks real coding tasks into small steps and guides developers through them using a Socratic method. Developers write every line of code themselves while the tutor asks questions, reviews their work, and runs tests. Each step must pass before advancing. The product emphasizes understanding over completion: developers get a record of which steps they completed unaided, proving they can actually do the work—not just a completion percentage.
The platform works with both public and private repositories. On the free tier, you can use any public repo URL. The Pro tier enables repo mode on your own checkout at 127.0.0.1, keeping your code local. CodeTrain is available as a web tutor, a command-line tool (CLI), and as an open-source skill for coding agents. It supports Python, JavaScript, bash, and arbitrary languages in repo mode.
Pricing model: Freemium
Free: $0, 10 lessons per month from public repos. Pro: $24/month with unlimited lessons from private repos and larger tutor model. Team: $32 per learner per month with everything in Pro plus team dashboard and onboarding journeys. Enterprise: Custom pricing with SSO, audit logs and self-hosting.
No. The tutor's core rule is that the learner writes every line. It never writes or pastes solutions, not even a single line. When learners are stuck, they get a smaller step or the next hint instead.
Copilot and Cursor produce code faster. CodeTrain ensures the person who shipped the code can still explain and change it weeks later. One is a typing accelerator; the other is a tutor that refuses to type. Most teams should use both.
Curated courses cover Python, JavaScript, bash and the maths behind LLMs in pure NumPy. Repo mode is not limited to that list—the lesson is built from whatever code you point it at, and steps run in a real sandbox.
Two ways. The free CodeTrain CLI runs on your machine and reads your local checkout—your code is never stored. On Pro, repo mode runs against your own checkout on 127.0.0.1 and edits land in your real branch. The free tier takes any public repo URL. Secrets and gitignored files are never read.
Those tools turn documents into courses. In software the documents are the least reliable thing you own; the repo is the source of truth, and it moved this morning. A generated course also can't tell you whether anyone can actually do the work, because nothing executes. It grades a written answer against a rubric and reports a completion percentage. CodeTrain builds the lesson from the code itself, makes the engineer write each step, and runs it. If it doesn't pass, the lesson doesn't advance. Different input, different proof.
