A free, browser-based tool for calculating Certificate of Deposit maturity values, interest earned and effective APY using bank-standard compound interest

The story so far

Screenshot of the CD Calculator homepage
Homepage of CD Calculator

CD Calculator is a set of free calculators for certificates of deposit with no account system or login required. The site applies the compound interest formula A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) to show exactly how many dollars you will hold when a CD term ends, given your deposit, the bank's quoted rate, the term length and compounding frequency.

Every calculation runs in your browser using JavaScript, so nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved. The tool handles APY-to-APR conversion automatically and includes daily, monthly or quarterly compounding options. Results update live as you type, with no submit button needed.

Beyond the main CD calculator, the site offers specialized tools for comparing rates across banks, calculating CD ladders, modeling early withdrawal penalties, converting between APY and APR, and pricing short-term and jumbo certificates. All formulas follow Regulation DD conventions (12 CFR 1030), the US rule governing how institutions disclose yields on deposit accounts.

Questions and answers

How is CD interest calculated?

CD interest is calculated with the compound interest formula A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), then subtracting your original deposit. P is the principal, r is the nominal annual rate as a decimal, n is the number of compounding periods per year, and t is the term in years. A $10,000 CD at 4.50% APY for 12 months matures at $10,450.00, so the interest is $450.00. The compounding frequency makes this different from simple multiplication: interest credited early in the term joins the principal and earns interest of its own for the remaining months.

Can I use this calculator for a CD at any bank?

Yes. The formula A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) is the same compound-interest formula every US bank and credit union uses to credit CD interest, so the calculator works for any institution. However, confirm the exact terms with your bank, as rates vary by institution, term length and sometimes by balance tier.

Is CD interest taxable?

Yes. CD interest is taxable as ordinary income in the year it is credited to your account, not the year the CD matures. On multi-year CDs, you owe tax on each year's credit even though you cannot touch the money until maturity. Your bank reports the amount on Form 1099-INT once it exceeds $10 in a year. An early withdrawal penalty is generally deductible against the interest reported on your taxes.
