A file sync client that keeps a folder in sync across Mac and Linux devices using SSH storage you control, without your keys or files passing through company
The story so far
Homepage of byosynch
byosynch keeps a folder in continuous two-way sync across your devices using SSH storage you choose, such as rsync.net or a server you run. Your SSH private keys stay on your devices, and files travel directly between your devices and your storage without passing through company servers.
Setup is a single guided command that creates a device-specific SSH key, verifies the connection to your storage, and enables automatic synchronization. Each device gets its own key and connects directly to your storage. When files are edited in two places simultaneously, byosynch keeps both versions rather than choosing which one wins.
The service is designed for privacy: your devices connect directly to your SSH storage over encrypted connections, and byosynch servers never receive your file contents, SSH keys, or storage credentials. You bring your own storage and pay your storage provider directly, with no per-device limits on syncing.

Why pay when Syncthing, rclone, and Unison are free?
Syncthing syncs devices directly when online at the same time. rclone bisync runs on demand or via scheduler. Unison's SSH mode requires a compatible copy on the server. byosynch keeps a folder in continuous two-way sync with SSH storage that runs nothing beyond standard commands, so devices never need to be online together.
Which storage works with byosynch?
Any host reachable over SSH with public-key authentication, SFTP, and the ability to run a checksum command like sha256sum. This includes rsync.net, most Linux and BSD servers, and NAS devices with SSH enabled. Nothing needs to be installed on the host.
Can byosynch or my storage provider read my files?
byosynch cannot read your files because they travel directly between your devices and storage without passing through company servers and SSH encrypts them in transit. However, your storage provider can read files as ordinary stored files because byosynch does not provide end-to-end encryption.
Is byosynch a backup?
No. byosynch keeps one current copy of a folder synchronized on every device. When a file changes in two places, it keeps both versions, but deletion on one device removes the file everywhere with no history. Keep an independent backup of important data.
What happens if I stop paying or byosynch shuts down?
Your files stay on your storage and devices as ordinary files with nothing to export. Without an active subscription, the license expires and sync stops without touching files. If byosynch stops operating, licenses can no longer renew and the same outcome occurs.
