The story so far
Homepage of RoadTax-Calculator.my
RoadTax-Calculator.my is a free web-based calculator designed to help Malaysian vehicle owners estimate their annual road tax (Lesen Kenderaan Motor or LKM) issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). The calculator covers all private vehicle classes including saloons, SUVs, MPVs, pickups, motorcycles, and electric vehicles, accounting for whether the vehicle is registered to an individual or a company.
The tool uses official JPJ motor vehicle licence schedules under the Road Transport Act 1987, updated for 2026 including new electric vehicle power-based (kW) block rates that took effect on 1 January 2026. Users enter their vehicle type, engine capacity in cubic centimetres (or motor power in kilowatts for EVs), registration region (Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, or duty-free zones), and optionally the year of manufacture to receive an instant estimate.
The calculator requires no registration, email, or data collection. All calculations run on the user's device, with no data leaving their browser. Results show which rate band the vehicle falls into, allowing users to verify the figure against official JPJ tables published on the site.

What is road tax in Malaysia?
Road tax is an annual fee that all vehicle owners in Malaysia must pay to legally drive on public roads. It is collected by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the amount depends on vehicle type, engine capacity or motor power for EVs, location, and ownership type.
Why do road tax rates differ between Peninsular and East Malaysia?
East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) has lower road tax rates, typically around 70-85% of Peninsular Malaysia rates. This is government policy acknowledging different economic conditions and road infrastructure development in these regions.
How much is road tax in Malaysia?
For a private petrol or diesel car in Peninsular Malaysia, road tax starts at RM20 a year for engines up to 1,000 cc, RM55 up to 1,200 cc and RM90 up to 1,600 cc. Above 1,600 cc a progressive rate applies to every cc over the band floor, so a 2,500 cc saloon costs many times more than a 1,600 cc one. Motorcycles start at RM2 a year, and electric vehicles are priced on motor power from 2026.
How is EV road tax calculated in Malaysia from 2026?
From 1 January 2026 electric vehicles are taxed on rated motor power in kilowatts rather than engine capacity. Group A charges a flat RM20 up to 50 kW, then RM10 more for every 10 kW block to RM70 at 100 kW. Group B runs from RM80 at 101 kW with RM20 per block. Blocks are upper-inclusive, so a 150 kW motor sits in the 140.01-150 kW block: a BYD Dolphin at 70 kW pays RM40, a BYD Atto 3 Extended at 150 kW pays RM160, and a BYD Seal Performance at 390 kW pays RM965. EV rates are national and do not vary by region.
