The story so far
Homepage of OpenPhotoId
OpenPhotoId is a free, open-source passport photo maker for passport, visa and ID photos. The entire process runs in your browser and works offline after the first visit, with no sign-up, no watermark, and nothing uploaded to servers.
The tool supports 25 documents from 16 countries and the European Union. It validates every photo against 12 checks, each reporting its measured value and the official band it was judged against. The checks include face detection, head height, eye line, centring, roll, glasses detection, inter-eye distance, blur, lighting symmetry, background uniformity, resolution, and file size.
Every step happens on your device using Rust compiled to WebAssembly. A face detector and portrait matting model run locally, providing hair-level edge detail from a second matting pass. Users can set backgrounds according to document requirements, crop to official rules, and export as JPEG for portals or lossless PNG with proper DPI for print sheets.
The tool processes batches of any size with a CSV report of which checks each photo passed. It is available as a web app, macOS and Windows desktop applications, and an Android app, with all surfaces keeping photos on the user's device.

Will the portal accept a photo from this passport photo maker?
The file meets the published size, background and geometry rules, and the checklist tells you which of the twelve checks passed and by how much. A portal can still reject a photo for reasons no software can measure — an expression, a reflection on glasses — so read the checklist rather than assuming.
What should the original photo look like?
Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression, in even light — a window works, direct sun does not — with head and shoulders in frame and a little room above your hair. A plain white or light wall is best: some documents, the US passport among them, do not accept a replaced background.
Can the passport photo maker do several at once?
Yes, with no cap. Choose any number of photos and one document; every photo gets the same rules, and a CSV report says which checks each one passed.
Does the passport photo maker work on a phone?
It is built for one. "Take a photo" opens the front camera directly. The first visit downloads the two models with a progress bar; after that they are on your device. Tested on iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 and on Android with Chrome. iOS 17 cannot start the models at all, and says so. Open the device test on your own phone to see what it does there.
Is there a passport photo maker app to install?
The web app installs from the browser's share or menu button — "Add to Home Screen" — and then behaves like a passport photo app, offline included. The macOS app (Apple Silicon and Intel), the Windows app and the Android app are on the releases page; the iPhone/iPad download is coming back soon.
