Homepage of Histiq

Histiq is a browser extension for Chrome and Edge that uses AI to search your browsing history and PDFs by meaning rather than exact keywords. When you visit a page, Histiq automatically indexes it locally on your device using a small embedding model. You can then search across all your indexed pages and PDFs by describing what you remember about them, and the tool finds matches via semantic similarity in under 50 milliseconds.

All processing happens entirely on your device. The extension runs a small embedding model directly in your browser to convert page content and search queries into vectors, with no data sent to external servers. Your browsing history and search activity never leave your device, and no account or signup is required.

Histiq indexes the full text of web pages and can also extract and index PDFs up to 50 MB. It includes privacy controls to exclude domains, mask sensitive URLs, and set retention windows. The extension works identically across Chrome and Edge and includes features like encrypted local backup and export.

Questions and answers

Is my browsing history really private?

Yes. Histiq stores everything in your browser's local IndexedDB. Embeddings are generated on your device with a small in-browser model (Xenova/MiniLM). Nothing is sent to any server, and you can verify this by inspecting the extension's network requests.

How does semantic search work without sending data to the cloud?

When you visit a page, Histiq runs a small embedding model (Xenova/MiniLM) directly in your browser to convert the page content into a 384-dimensional vector. When you search, your query is converted the same way, and the closest matches are returned via cosine similarity, all on your device.

Does Histiq index PDFs?

Yes. When you open a PDF in your browser, Histiq automatically detects it, extracts the text layer using PDF.js, and indexes it in chunks just like a web page. You can search across research papers, contracts, documentation, and any text-based PDF by meaning. PDFs up to 50 MB are supported.

How does the 14-day trial work?

The trial runs entirely inside the extension and starts on install with no signup, no card, and no account required. All features are unlocked for 14 days from day one. After that, you pick a plan to keep using semantic search.

Will my browser slow down?

No. Indexing happens in a background service worker with idle-priority scheduling, and embedding generation is throttled to use unused CPU cycles. On a modern laptop, you won't notice Histiq is running.
